Prof. Gaetano Luglio is an Associate Professor of General Surgery at the University of Naples Federico II and a Consultant Surgeon at the University Hospital Policlinico Federico II. In 2023 he obtained the national scientific qualification for the functions of full professorship in General Surgery.

His teaching activity as Professor of Surgery takes place within the School of Medicine and Surgery, the Residency Training Programme in General Surgery, Gynecology and Obstetrics, as well as at the Degree Course in Nursing and Dietetics of the University of Naples Federico II.

His training took place mainly in Naples, as well as in international institutions such as the Department of Colorectal Surgery of the Mayo Clinic (Minnesota) in the United States and at St Mark's Hospital in London (UK).

In addition to the treatment of pathologies pertaining to general and abdominal oncological surgery (gallbladder stones, hernias, laparoceles, gastrointestinal neoplasms, etc.) he has always had a pre-eminent interest in colorectal surgery, in its various fields, from colorectal tumors to inflammatory bowel diseases (Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis), as well as proctology (hemorrhoids, fistulas, fissures and rectal prolapses). He has also gained extensive experience in the field of highly complex surgical abdominal pathologies, such as intestinal failure (short intestine and complex abdomens) or peritoneal carcinomatosis from advanced gynecological or gastrointestinal neoplasms, which often require multivisceral resections or chemotherapy treatments locoregional.

Expertise in transanal and transrectal 3D ultrasound.

He is among the authors of the European Guidelines (ECCO) for the surgical treatment of Crohn's Disease, as well as of the Italian Guidelines (SICCR - Italian Society of Colorectal Surgery) for both Crohn's Disease and Ulcerative Colitis. He is one of the representatives for visceral surgery for neuroendocrine tumors at the NET Naples Center of Excellence (ENETs).

He is currently the Regional Delegate for the Campania region of the Italian Society of Colorectal Surgery (SICCR).

He is the author of over 120 scientific publications, published in indexed international journals. He has been invited as a speaker at over 100 national and international conferences. He has performed over 1500 major abdominal as well as proctological surgeries as the first operator, with laparoscopic, robotic and open techniques.
