Prof. Alessandro Armuzzi leads the Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) Unit and co-leads the IBD Center at the IRCCS Humanitas Research Hospital, Milan, Italy. He is also full Professor of Gastroenterology and Director of the Gastroenterology Residency Program at Humanitas University, Milan, Italy.

Professor Armuzzi trained at the University of Bologna, Catholic University of Rome, and completed advanced research and clinical training in IBD at the John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford University Hospitals, UK.

Professor Armuzzi’s research interests focus on the design of both real-life trials and observational studies in IBD, clinical/biological prediction and outcomes in IBD and other immune-mediated diseases, diagnostic modalities to assess disease activity in IBD, and advanced IBD therapies.

He is the Author of more than 390 scientific papers published in peer-reviewed impact-factored scientific journals with a personal impact factor of more than 3.500, a Scopus H-index of 62 and more than 17,000 citations. 

Professor Armuzzi served as a member of several gastroenterology associations, including the Scientific Committee of the Italian Society of Gastroenterology (SIGE, Scientific Committee 2014-2017), the Italian Group for the Study of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IG-IBD, Chair from 2018 to 2019, EduCom Chair 2020-2021, 2024) and has fulfilled multiple roles within the European Crohn’s and Colitis Organisation (ECCO) including Chair of the Clinical Research Committee (ClinCom) between 2015 and 2017, Internal Auditor between 2019 and 2020, and General Secretary between 2021 and 2024.
