Dr. Augustine J. N. Iroatulam is a Consultant General and Colorectal surgeon. He received his training at the University of Siena Italy and the Department of Colorectal Surgery, at the Cleveland Clinic Florida under the tutorship of doctors Wexner, Nogueras and Weiss, He developed a keen interest in laparoscopic colorectal surgery and anorectal physiology, on which he has written book chapters, authored and co-authored many manuscripts published in prestigious colorectal journals. After completing the course he moved to Providence and worked as a staff of Brown University for one year and thereafter he returned to Pistoia, Italy (the present San Jacopo Hospital) where he introduced laparoscopic colorectal surgery in the Department of Surgery and hosted the first congress on Laparoscopic Colorectal Surgery for Malignancy with the participation of Drs Wexner and Weiss. He is a staff surgeon of the Department of Surgery of San Jacopo Hospital, one of the leading centers of laparoscopic colorectal surgery, chaired by Dr. Sandro Giannessi.
He is a member of the Italian Society of Colorectal Surgeons (SICCR) and Tosco-umbra Surgical Society. He holds annual update courses in Coloproctology for the Pistoia chapter of the Medical Medica Society.
In 2020 he founded (and is a member of) the Nigerian Society for Colorectal Disorders, one of the fastest-growing colorectal surgical societies in the world.
He instituted the annual IROATULAM AWARD FOR SURGICAL SCIENCE AT THE UNIVERSITY OF ILORIN TEACHING HOSPITAL, given to the best Paper Presentation by the residents.
He is the head of the Proctology Unit of San Jacopo Hospital Pistoia and also the Director of the Austencare Centre of Proctology Pistoia. His main professional and scientific interests focus on colorectal surgery. He has a keen interest in anorectal physiology (including ultrasonographic imaging) and in anorectal diseases and surgery.
He is a promoter of minimally invasive surgical techniques for managing benign anorectal disorders.
