F. Borja de Lacy read Medicine at the University of Barcelona – including a stay at the Department of Surgery at the Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago – and received his B.Sc. in Medicine and Surgery in 2012. After passing the national State examination, I did my General and Digestive Surgery residency at the Hospital Clinic of Barcelona between 2013 and 2018, eventually becoming the Chief Resident. His surgical training focused mainly on colorectal and esophago-gastric oncological surgery, with a special interest in minimally invasive techniques. However, in 2018 and 2019, he had the opportunity to train under Dr. Pedro Barrios, the director of the Catalonia Peritoneal Carcinomatosis Program and head of the Peritoneal Oncological Surgery Unit at Hospital Sant Joan Despí "Moisès Broggi" in Barcelona, Spain.

The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) Privacy Rule defines “health research” as “a systematic investigation, including research development, testing and evaluation, designed to develop or contribute to generalizable knowledge”. Research is one of the three aspects of the comprehensive mission of academic medical centers, with patient care and education. In recent years, F. Borja de Lacy has been able to focus on research in Barcelona and in two stays in teaching hospitals in the Netherlands (VUmc and AMC, under Drs. Jurriaan Tuynman and Willem Bemelman). In 2017 the opportunity arose to start a doctoral project at the University of Barcelona, spending four years on part-time research into the transanal approach to the treatment of rectal cancer. The result was his Ph.D. thesis, which he defended in July 2021, receiving a Cum Laude mention, the highest merit in the Spanish system. F. Borja de Lacy is currently part of the staff in the Gastrointestinal Surgery service at the Hospital Clinic of Barcelona, mainly in charge of peritoneal oncological surgery. He is the author of more than 50 scientific papers published in peer-reviewed impact factored scientific journals.
