Dr. John Scott is currently an assistant professor of surgery, in the division of Trauma and Acute Care Surgery at the University of Michigan.
Dr. Scott completed his General Surgery residency at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, MA. He then went on to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, WA for trauma fellowship before being recruited to Michigan to work as a trauma surgeon and as a member of the Institute for Healthcare Policy and Innovation as well as the Center for Healthcare Policy and Outcomes. In 2021 he was selected as one of the “Future Trauma Leaders” by the American College of Surgeons’ Committee on Trauma; and is currently a member of the Healthcare and Economics Committee of the American Association for the Surgery of Trauma.
Dr. Scott’s research interests are focused on timely access to affordable surgical care. He has over 130 peer reviewed publications to date, including multiple invited commentaries on health insurance policy and financial risk protection for surgical patients. He is a federally funded researcher on a K08 from AHRQ to study financial toxicity and health insurance design for surgical patients. He is the co-founder of the Michigan Health Economics and Affordability Lab (MHEAL) and the co-director of a state-wide quality collaborative to address unmet social health needs for surgical patients entitled Michigan Social Health Interventions to Eliminate Disparities (MSHIELD).
