He graduated as MD in 1983 from the University of Barcelona, continued as a resident in Internal Medicine at Hospital Clínic and then as a fellow in Renal Medicine. After his fellowship training in renal medicine at the University of Barcelona, Professor Campistol continued his clinical activity in renal transplantation at the Renal Transplant Unit of Hospital Clínic. During this period he also investigated the pathogenesis of dialysis-associated amyloidosis and through a Fulbright grant he spent a stay at the Boston University School of Medicine. He obtained his PhD in 1990, with the doctoral thesis: "Pathogenesis of dialysis-amyloidosis and the role of lymphocytes on B2-microglobulin synthesis and dialysis membranes". Professor Campistol, currently, is General Director of the Hospital Clínic de Barcelona (2016), after being its Medical Director (2014) and directing the Clinical Institute of Nephrology and Urology (ICNU) of the Hospital Clínic in Barcelona.
He is also Associate Professor of Nephrology and a staff member of the Renal Transplant Unit at Hospital Clínic, both at the University of Barcelona. He has published more than 500 articles in peer-reviewed journals - both experimental and clinical. Professor Campistol is a member of several international transplantation societies, and a member of the editorial board of the main international journals in the area of transplantation.
