Dr. L. D. Britt, an esteemed surgeon and philanthropist, has led a distinguished career marked by leadership in academic surgery and community service. Born in Suffolk, Virginia, and valedictorian of Booker T. Washington High School in 1968, Dr. Britt excelled in his studies at the University of Virginia and later at Harvard Medical School and Harvard School of Public Health, earning a doctorate in medicine and a master's in public health. His surgical training at the University of Illinois and Cook County Hospitals was augmented by a trauma and surgical critical care fellowship at the Maryland Institute for Emergency Medical Services.
Dr. Britt's professional journey led him to Eastern Virginia Medical School, where he advanced to become chief of trauma and professor of surgery, eventually becoming the first African American to secure an endowed chair in surgery. His passion for education has been recognized with numerous awards, including the Outstanding Faculty award from the Virginia governor, the William H. Dr. Britt's leadership extends across 37 professional societies, including past presidencies of the Southeastern Surgical Congress and the American Association for the Surgery of Trauma.
