Dr. Maria Teresa Gómez Hernández has a permanent position as a Consultant Thoracic surgeon at the Department of Thoracic Surgery at Salamanca University Hospital since 2016. She is also an Associate Professor of the Department of Surgery at the University of Salamanca since 2017. She received her MD degree from the University of Salamanca in 2009 and completed her residency at the Salamanca University Hospital (2010-2015). She received additional training in esophageal surgery with Prof. P. Thomas (Marseille, 2012), in chest wall deformities with Prof. H. Pilegaard (Aarhus, 2013) and in lung transplant with Prof. W. Klepetko (Vienna, 2014 and 2021). She was awarded the ESTS Young Investigator Award in 2013. In 2016, she obtained her PhD degree and she was certified as FEBTS.

Her main professional and scientific interests focus on thoracic oncologic surgery, minimally invasive thoracic surgery and particularly robotic surgery, sublobar resections, quality of care, risk stratification, patient-reported outcomes and teaching surgery.

She is the author of more than 70 scientific papers published in peer-reviewed impact-factored scientific journals with a Scopus H-index of 10 and more than 300 citations. 

Additionally, Dr. Gómez is a member of the Scientific Committee of the Spanish Society of Thoracic Surgeons (SECT) since June 2023 and the Scientific Committee of the SECT Registry (ReSECT) since February 2022. She also serves as a member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Current Challenges in Thoracic Surgery and as a reviewer for several scientific journals.
