Dr. Melissa Nicole Hanson is a Bariatric and Minimally Invasive Surgeon at Guelph General Hospital in Guelph, Ontario. She completed her MIS and Bariatric Fellowships at McGill University before joining the surgical team in Guelph.

Dr. Hanson is the co-chair of the Fundamentals of Laparoscopic Surgery Committee since 2023 and is currently leading the development of the didactic curriculum. She is actively involved in surgical education and is dedicated to enhancing the training and skills of upcoming surgeons.

Her research interests are centered around surgical practice and professional fulfillment. Through her work with the SAGES RPS Task Force on "Reimagining the Practice of Surgery," Dr. Hanson has published influential papers exploring how surgeons find joy in their work, the barriers to joy, and the gendered differences in surgical practice. She was also involved in the Fellowship Council's EPA pilot project and has published on the outcomes of this initiative.

Dr. Hanson is committed to advancing minimally invasive surgical techniques and improving patient outcomes. Her professional interests include bariatric surgery, surgical education, and the well-being of surgical practitioners.
