Dr. Michael A. Edwards is a Senior Consultant in the Division of Advanced GI and Bariatric Surgery, Department of Surgery at Mayo Clinic Florida, and Associate Professor of Surgery at the Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine. His clinical interests include the multidisciplinary care of patients with severe obesity, foregut, gastrointestinal and abdominal wall disorders using minimal access surgical techniques, including high volume robotic surgery. 

He earned his medical degree from George Washington University School of Medicine in Washington, D.C., where he also completed his General Surgery Residency. Afterwards, Dr. Edwards completed a fellowship in Surgical Critical Care at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri, followed by a fellowship in Minimally Invasive and Bariatric Surgery at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, Massachusetts. Dr. Edwards has over 15 years of surgical clinical experience.

He is a member of several surgical societies and serve of numerous national committees. As a member of SAGES, he serves on the Publications, Program and Hernia Committees. As a member of ASMBS, her serves on the Research, Quality Improvement and Patient Safety and Diversity and Inclusion Committees, as well as Vice-Chair of the Diversity and inclusion Committee. As a member of the Society for Black Academic Surgeons, he serves as the Chair of the Membership Committee. 

Dr. Edwards research interest include surgical outcomes in surgical patients, with a particular interest in racial/ethnic disparities in bariatric surgery patient outcomes. He is an author of over 70 peer reviewed publications, several book chapters, and numerous abstracts. He has a Scopus H-index of 16, and over 1,200 citations. He also serves as a reviewer for numerous journals, and an editorial board member for SOARD. 

Dr. Edwards has strong interested and expertise in surgical quality. He has championed several Mayo Clinic enterprise quality initiatives and now serves as the Surgical Quality Subcommittee Chair at Mayo Clinic Florida and Quality Director for the Department of Surgery.

In his free time, Dr. Edwards enjoys spending time with his spouse, three daughters and two dogs. He also enjoys golfing, exercising and community engagement and outreach activities.
