Dr. Philipp-Alexander Neumann is an Associate Professor in the Department of Surgery at the TUM School of Medicine and Health, as well as an Attending Surgeon and Coordinator of the Oncological Colorectal Center at the Department of Surgery, TUM University Hospital, Klinikum rechts der Isar, Technical University of Munich. He currently holds the prestigious Albrecht Struppler Clinician Scientist Fellowship at the Institute for Advanced Study of the Technical University of Munich.
In addition to his clinical career, Dr. Neumann has focused on both basic and clinical research in colorectal surgery, with a special interest in inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD). His postdoctoral fellowship at Emory University in Atlanta, USA, involved participation in numerous projects related to epithelial wound closure and gut inflammation models. Since 2011, his research has concentrated on the role of mediators in intestinal inflammation and anastomotic healing. He has successfully developed preclinical murine models of intestinal anastomotic healing in combination with IBD and colitis models, which have significantly advanced the understanding of intestinal fibrosis, particularly in Crohn’s disease.
Dr. Neumann’s research group investigates various aspects of intestinal wound healing, focusing on anastomotic healing, inflammation, and fibrosis. His work spans multiple patient cohorts, including those with colorectal and esophageal cancer, sepsis, and IBD. He has explored therapeutic approaches such as anti-inflammatory nanoparticles and anastomotic coatings in murine and porcine models to improve postoperative outcomes. In collaboration with Dr. Cira, his group is also studying the role of the microbiome and its perioperative modulation in anastomotic healing within IBD.
Dr. Neumann has been a member of the Academy for Excellence of the German Chairs for Surgery since 2018. This academy recognizes outstanding young surgeons with support for both clinical and scientific excellence.
His work is internationally recognized, with collaborations at institutions such as Imperial College London and the University of Chicago. Dr. Neumann’s research has received funding from prestigious organizations, including the German Research Foundation, the German Cancer Aid, the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, the Else Kröner-Fresenius Foundation, and the Bavarian Research Foundation.
Dr. Neumann is the author of 59 scientific papers published in peer-reviewed journals, with a Scopus h-index of 20 and over 2,000 citations. He serves on the Editorial Board Member of Scientific Reports.
His primary clinical and research interests include colorectal and IBD surgery, minimally invasive and robotic surgery, and the pathophysiology of anastomotic leakage, intestinal inflammation and fibrosis.
