Professor Riccardo Rosati is head of the Gastroenterological Surgery Unit and of the Week Surgery Unit at IRCCS San Raffaele Hospital in Milan and collaborates at Casa di Cura La Madonnina.
Since 2014, he has been director of the School of Specialization in General Surgery at the Vita-Salute San Raffaele University of Milan, where, a year later, he was appointed full professor of General Surgery.
After graduating in Medicine and Surgery at the University of Milan, he specialized in General Surgery at the same university. His training continued at the University of Turin, where he specialized in Thoracic-Pulmonary Surgery.
His medical activity focuses on Digestive System Surgery, operating with both traditional and minimally invasive approaches. Specifically, he mainly treats neoplastic and benign pathologies of the esophagus, stomach, colon and rectum, while part of his training is hepatobiliary and pancreatic pathology. As for Endocrine Surgery, which is part of the Operative Unit he directs, he performs laparoscopic surgery for adrenal pathology, while he prefers minicervicotomy for thyroid and parathyroid. The Operating Units coordinated by Prof. Riccardo Rosati have performed more than 25,000 surgeries.
His merits are evident in the organization and development of various surgical fields (General Surgery, Minimally Invasive, Emergency, Traumatology) and Day Surgery. He was the first in Italy to introduce the outpatient modality for laparoscopic surgery under general anesthesia, such as cholecystectomy and plastic surgery of the abdominal wall for hernia and laparocele.
Under his leadership, San Raffaele Hospital receives a significant increase in oncological surgery of the digestive tract, becoming the first Italian center for esophageal surgery as of 2015 (data AGENAS PNE). In the same structure, it created two multidisciplinary specialized centers: one is dedicated to the study, research and treatment of the pathology of the first digestive tract, while the other deals with thyroid pathologies.
Its bibliographic production includes more than 300 scientific publications and its participation in national and international congresses is conspicuous. In addition to leading roles in scientific groups, Prof. Riccardo Rosati is a member, among others, of the ACS (American College of Surgeons), the ESA (European Surgical Association), the ISDE (International Society for Diseases of the Esophagus) and the SISME (Italian Society for the Study of Esophageal Diseases), of which he is also a founding member. Since 2018, he has been elected secretary general of ESDE (European Society for Diseases of the Esophagus).
