Dr. Willem Bemelman, MD, PhD is Professor of Minimally Invasive and Colorectal Surgery at AUMC. He was the former president of the European Society of Coloproctology (ESCP). Dr. Bemelman has reviewed scientific publications in the field of colorectal surgery in renowned journals such as Surgical Endoscopy, British Journal of Surgery, Digestive Surgery, Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Colorectal Disease, and European Journal Surgical Oncology.

He graduated as a surgeon trained at the Department of Surgery of the Academic Medical Hospital, University of Amsterdam and St. Lucas Hospital in Amsterdam (The Netherlands) in 1994. After his training, he worked at the Department of Surgery at Leiden University Medical Center, responsible for benign gastrointestinal conditions. In 1999, he returned to the Academic Medical Center to further develop minimally invasive surgical programs. In 2006, he was appointed as a Professor of Surgery. His fields of interest in patient care and research include minimally invasive treatment of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), colorectal cancer, and surgical complications. Prof. Bemelman is an EBSQ certified colorectal surgeon (Bologna, 2005)and is also the co-founder and former chair of Surgeons of European Crohn’s and Colitis Organization (ECCO), which is focused on inflammatory bowel diseases, and the collaboration of experts within Europe and beyond. He has published nearly 600 articles in renowned journals, coached 45 PhD students, and has an H-index of 68.
