Dr. Ziqiang Wang is a distinguished professor and Ph.D. supervisor at West China Hospital, Sichuan University, specializing in colorectal surgery and minimally invasive surgery. As the Director of the Colorectal Cancer Center, he performs over 600 colorectal surgeries annually. Dr. Wang proposed small vessels on mesorectal and parietal abdominal and pelvic fascia as novel landmarks for inter-fascial dissection in colorectal surgery. He introduced several innovative surgical procedures, including a unidirectionally progressive, pancreas-oriented procedure for laparoscopic D3 right hemicolectomy, a bladder peritoneum flap closure for the pelvic cavity after laparoscopic TME, and retro-muscular mesh placement in a Sugarbaker configuration through a laparoscopic-assisted extra-peritoneal route for end colostomy.

He pioneered the combined use of chemo-radiotherapy and selective lateral lymph node dissection for mid-low rectal cancer in China and drafted the “Expert Consensus on the Diagnosis and Treatment of Lateral Lymph Node Metastasis in Rectal Cancer (2019 and 2024 editions).” Dr. Wang is the convener of the multidisciplinary team (MDT) for colorectal cancer comprehensive treatment discussions at his hospital.

Dr. Wang has initiated and completed three multi-center clinical trials in China to address the necessity and effectiveness of selective use of neoadjuvant therapy in rectal cancer according to risk factors, including total neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy for high-risk patients, chemotherapy for patients with intermediate risks, and the efficacy and timing of early response assessment for neoadjuvant chemotherapy. He has secured two National Natural Science Foundation projects, one Ministry of Science and Technology’s 135 Key Project, and five provincial and ministerial-level research projects.

In the laboratory, Dr. Wang’s research focuses on the mechanisms of exosomes in colorectal cancer liver and peritoneal metastasis, molecular prognosis of colorectal cancer, and artificial intelligence in colorectal cancer diagnosis. He has published over 200 SCI articles.
