Prof. Dr. Mohammed Munavvar (United Kingdom) and his team at the Royal Preston Hospital (United Kingdom) will perform a SEMI-RIGID Thoracoscopy and answer all your questions.

Clinical History:

  •  Progressively worsening breathlessness and steadily accumulating pleural effusion. Pleural effusion sample confirmed an exudate and negative cytology


Technique description:

  • Under Local Anaesthesia and sedation, in the Bronchoscopy unit, under perfect sterility, and a 12mm incisión, the new Thoracosope was introduced to drain the pleural effusion, take biopsies and place a chest drain


Procedure steps:

  1. Ultrasound of the chest and mark the point of entry
  2.  Sedation with midazolam and fentanyl
  3. Drape and clean the site
  4. Inject Local Anaesthesia
  5. Incision and blunt dissection
  6. Introduce trocar and cannula
  7. Pass thoracoscope and drain effusion
  8. Examine pleural surfaces in detail with WL and NBI
  9.  Obtain biopsies
  10. Talc poudrage if appropriate
  11. Place chest drain +/- IPC
  12. Suture and close
