Dr. Michel Gagner (Canada) and his team at the Westmount Square Surgical Center (Canada) will perform a Magnetic Duodeno-ileostomy (MAGDI) without Gastrectomy for Type-2 Diabetes using a Swallowable Magnet and answer all your questions.

Clinical History:

  • 55 years old, male.

  • BMI:

    • 35 kg/m2.

  • Baseline glycemia of 2335.5 mg/dL.

  • Baseline HbA1c of 8.5%.

Technique description:

  • Magnetic Duodeno-ileostomy (MAGDI) without Gastrectomy for Type-2 Diabetes using a Swallowable Magnet.

Procedure steps:

  1. Patient undergoes the ingestion of a linear magnet.

  2. Fluoroscopy is performed 2-3 hours later to confirm its position.

  3. Laparoscopy to relocate the lower magnet to the ileum.

  4. Gastroscopy to relocate the upper magnet into the first duodenum.

  5. The ileal loop is brought ante-colic to secure a "lock" with the duodenal magnet.

  6. Closure of the mesenteric defect with non-absorbable suture.

Training Objectives:

  • Comprehend the principle of mechanical compression anastomosis.

  • Elaborate on indications and contra-indications of magnetic surgery.
