The main issues discussed are the five stages of surgical bleeding that take place in almost all types of surgeries. As many articles confirm, there are a lot of different options for the assessment and treatment of intraoperative bleeding, and there are many products and methodologies in the marketplace.

Ethicon is the first company to conduct quantitative studies in order to identify the optimal use of hemostats. This study has analyzed 450 surgeons as they choose hemostats predominantly based on site and situation.

Site factors refer to the anatomical and critical anatomic structures that could be impacted. On the other hand, situation factors take into account the bleeding risk associated with intraoperative and postoperative actions; other factors also include those such as access or tissue surface.

Currently, there are five issues that have emerged in relation to bleeding: continuous oozing, problematic, difficult to access, potential re-bleeding risk, and high-pressure vessel bleeding. During the session, many details are given about each type of bleeding.

Lastly, there is also a worksheet provided, where the different kinds of bleeding can be identified as well as the main proposed solutions, and how to use them.
